Abortion
Methods

Mifepristone & Misoprostol

  • Used before ten weeks.
  • The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 1-2 days later and causes uterine contractions.
  • Fetal demise occurs from the breakdown of the uterine lining, or the fetus is expelled by the force of contractions.
  • Common physical side effects: heavy bleeding for an average of two weeks, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, and chills.
  • Serious side effects: hemorrhage, infection, and incomplete abortion

Suction Curettage

  • Used before 12 weeks.
  • A small tube is inserted into the uterus, and a suction machine removes all uterine contents.
  • The procedure typically lasts less than 15 minutes, and patients return home on the same day.
  • Fetal demise occurs from the force of the suction.
  • Common physical side effects: pain/cramping and bleeding.
  • Serious side effects: uterine perforation, hemorrhage, infection, and incomplete abortion.

Dilation & Evacuation

  • Used between 12 and 24 weeks.
  • Before the abortion, the cervix is dilated. The procedure typically lasts less than 30 minutes, and patients return
home the same day. Grasping forceps are introduced into the uterus to remove parts of the fetus; other instruments are used to remove the placenta and other pregnancy tissue.
  • Fetal demise occurs from the force of the forceps.
  • Common physical side effects: pain/cramping, bleeding.
  • Serious side effects: uterine perforation, hemorrhage, infection, and incomplete abortion

The Abortion Pill

The abortion pill (mifepristone) accounts for almost 52% of abortions in Michigan.

The abortion pill is a two-drug regimen that is taken over the course of one to two days. The drug in the regime which blocks progesterone is mifepristone and leads to the uterine lining thinning. After one to two days, Misoprostol is then taken to expel the pregnancy.

Abortion Pill Reversal

Do you regret your decision and wish you could reverse the effects of the abortion pill? It may not be too late!
