Infanticide has a long, sordid history. Many societies and cultures engaged in the practice due to gender preference or to discriminate against and weed out what they deemed “unwanted” populations. While no longer broadly or openly accepted, infanticide still takes place in many forms today.

Michigan’s Safe Delivery Law
Michigan law allows mothers to confidentially deliver unharmed newborns up to 72 hours old to designated “Emergency Service Providers” without legal repercussions for child abandonment.
Partial-Birth Abortion
In this late-term procedure, a puncture is created at the base of a baby’s head to suction out the baby’s brains. Federal law bans this abortion procedure, however, in 2023, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill legalizing partial-birth abortion in the state.
