As America celebrates its 250th birthday, I find myself reflecting on the first time I truly felt a deep sense of patriotism. It wasn’t at a parade or a fireworks display – It was when I turned 18 and cast my first vote.

I remember walking into the polling place with a sense of pride and responsibility. My parents had spent years teaching me the importance of being informed and encouraged me to research the candidates and issues for myself. They reminded me that voting is more than a civic duty; it is a sacred honor. It is an opportunity to stand for the values we believe are worth defending.

This year, that responsibility is as important as ever.

We live in a culture that frequently speaks about choice. This is especially true for the issue of abortion. Yet for a choice to be truly meaningful, women must have access to all of the information, resources, and support available to them. Since abortion is legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy, it is often presented as the only choice. A Woman facing an unexpected pregnancy deserves to know that there is more than one path forward. She deserves to know that support exists for making a choice for life.

In Michigan, more than 100 Pregnancy Resource Centers work every day to ensure that women receive compassionate care and practical assistance. These centers provide pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, parenting classes, material support for mothers and babies, and information about adoption. Their mission is simple: to empower women with the resources they need to make informed, life-affirming decisions.

Far too often, women are told the lie that abortion is their only realistic option. Pregnancy Resource Centers offer something different. They provide truth, hope, encouragement and tangible support. They remind women that they are not alone and that there are people ready to walk alongside them throughout their pregnancy and beyond.

During the month we celebrate Independence Day, let us reflect on the freedoms we enjoy as Americans; let us also remember the responsibility that comes with those freedoms. One of the most patriotic acts is to participate in our democracy and make our voices heard at the ballot box.

Let us support leaders who recognize the value of every human life and who are committed to ensuring that women receive the information, care and resources they deserve. By standing for both women and children, we can help build a culture that values life, compassion and human dignity for all.
