As our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we are reminded that “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” are not independent ideals but interdependent principles critical to a free society.
In 1973, Roe v. Wade not only legalized abortion nationwide but perverted our fundamental understanding of what true freedom looks like while robbing women of the right to demand life-affirming care and respect as they face unplanned pregnancies often in fear and alone. The ultimate overturn of Roe three short years ago reminds us of our undying ability to right our wrongs. Yet, the effects of Roe live on.
Here in Michigan, abortion is legal through all nine months of pregnancy. Safeguards for women, families and children, including the unborn, have been stripped from law. Parental rights are threatened as advocacy organizations hell-bent on an abortion-only response to unplanned pregnancy target minors without their parents’ involvement.
At this pivotal moment in our history, Right to Life of Michigan and pro-lifers across our state share a renewed commitment to stand in the gap, supporting women as they face unplanned pregnancies, strengthening families, safeguarding parental rights, and embracing and valuing life on all fronts.
True choice exists only when women have every opportunity to make a choice for life if they would like to do so. As we work to ensure this extraordinary nation lives up to what the founders imagined, we accept the call to value, embrace and foster “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” today and in the days ahead.
