Longstanding Protections for Women and the Unborn in Final Stages of Pregnancy Set to Be Removed in Unprecedented Action
Lansing, MI – Today, in a strict party-line vote, State Senate Democrats voted to send a sweeping, full repeal of the 1931 abortion law to the Governor for signature. By a 20-18 vote in the Senate (all Democrats and no Republicans), members voted to not only pass the House version of the repeal but their own radical repeal.
The 1931 law has been in place and partially effective even under Roe v. Wade, containing critical portions that remain constitutional in the wake of Proposal 3. Proposal 3 states that “the state may regulate the provision of abortion care after fetal viability.” The 1931 abortion law is the only abortion statute that currently regulates post-viable abortions.
“Today’s reckless vote takes us down an increasingly dangerous path, and Michiganders are watching,” said Barbara Listing, President, Right to Life of Michigan. “This sweeping removal of common-sense health and safety protections that have been in place for decades further demonstrates the radical proabortion stance to which the majority of our elected officials have come to subscribe. This position puts viable human life and women’s health second to an increasingly radical agenda that knows no boundaries.”
