Current Status of Abortion Law in Michigan
In Michigan, a woman can have an abortion throughout her entire pregnancy for any reason. There is no limit on access throughout the state. Moreover, nearly 70% of abortions are now done through the abortion pill available online and in clinics. That said, for choice to truly exist, women must be given every opportunity to make a choice for life.
In the state of Michigan, there are about 100 pregnancy centers in every corner of the state that offer a range of confidential and free care, ranging from medical care and counseling, transportation and housing assistance, to clothing and material support.
True freedom of choice requires information. Information about these care centers and information about abortion, including common risks. Sadly, long-standing legal protections that ensured women had access to factual information have been rolled back under Democratic leadership during the past few years.
In 2023, Democrat state legislators passed, and Governor Whitmer signed, a law to remove clinic health and safety standards for abortion clinics. In the same year, they repealed abortion complication reporting, meaning women no longer have access to information about risks in our state. On top of that, in 2025, a Court of Claims judge blocked the informed consent law, meaning women are no longer provided basic facts about an abortion procedure or how the abortion pill works before undergoing an abortion.
Under the Democrats’ failed leadership in our state, women are at greater risk when they have an abortion in Michigan than just a few years ago. The last abortion report showed a 38% spike in serious abortion complications. (MDHHS Abortion report July 2, 2024)

Right to Life of Michigan Legislative and Policy Priorities
Safeguarding Women’s Health:
To safeguard women’s health and ensure they have the information needed to make informed decisions, Right to Life of Michigan is advocating for legislation that would restore common-sense health and safety standards and licensing requirements for abortion clinics, as well as comprehensive abortion reporting, including reporting on complications. House Bills 6076, 5201, 5202 and 5203, currently under consideration in the Michigan House, would accomplish these goals.
In addition, in the interest of women’s health, we urge the Court of Appeals to reverse the injunction on the standardized informed consent law.
Expanding Choice:
Right to Life of Michigan is encouraging legislation that will support Michiganders’ ability to grow their families. This includes legislation that would establish a state child tax credit, remove sales tax from baby items, create a pre-taxed childcare savings account, and allocate money for budget items such as diaper bank funding.
Protecting Parental Rights:
Right to Life of Michigan supports legislation to allow parents’ access to their minor children’s medical records. Recent attempts to pass legislation to accomplish this goal received only three votes from Democrats in the state House (HB 5974 passed 61-46 on June 24, 2026) before being sent to the Democrat controlled state Senate, where it is unlikely to pass.
Parental rights have been systematically undermined by legislation enacted under Democratic leadership that eliminated penalties for school employees who assist students in obtaining abortions without involving their parents. Currently, minor girls must have a parent’s consent before obtaining an abortion, but this law was up for repeal on two separate occasions by Democratic lawmakers.
Millions of taxpayer dollars have been funneled to expand school-based health care clinics, while many parents have been shocked to discover they are locked out of their child’s patient portal once their child turns 13. (2023 School Aid Budget)

Right to Life of Michigan continues to work to prevent the passage of bills antithetical to our mission, including legislation to legalize assisted suicide.
