In the 1987 film The Princess Bride, Westley and Buttercup are making their way through the Fire Swamp when Buttercup accidentally steps in quicksand. She was so distracted by the danger all around her and an uncertain future she forgot the most important thing: knowing where she stood. From throwing the perfect football spiral to building a skyscraper, firm footing is essential to ultimate success of any endeavor. Buttercup learned this the hard way when she forgot to look at her footing and was swallowed by a sinkhole.
Knowing where candidates stand on important issues is just as vital as knowing where to walk in a dangerous swamp—and the most important issue in America today is the right to life. Where a candidate stands on life will tell us if they adhere to the U.S. Constitution, and if they truly care for the best interests of the nation. Without life there is no liberty, nor is there the pursuit of happiness.
This year, Michiganders have the opportunity to elect candidates to the two highest offices in the nation: the presidency and the U.S. Senate. The decisions of these two officials will have far reaching consequences, and could mean the difference between life and death for hundreds of thousands in the coming years. Will the persons elected to represent Michigan be standing upon solid ground of the inherent value of human lives? Or, will they sink into the swamp?
