Within the prolife community, there are certain remembrances that are not always well-known to the general public. One example is that, in the month of October, we celebrate Respect Life Month. While we work to protect life from conception until natural death every day of the year, October is used to highlight the need for an increase in respect for the dignity and value of each human person.

We are all uniquely gifted, with individual personalities and talents that cannot be 100% replicated by anyone else. The true value of human life comes from our unique qualities that have never been seen before and won’t be seen again. There will never be another me, and there will be another you. With the complete history of humankind and the billions of people who have walked this Earth, that is an amazing reality!

The respect for life in our country needs to be revitalized, especially in our state of Michigan. After the passage of Proposal 3 in 2022, we have seen an increase in abortion numbers. While we no longer require abortion reporting in our state, we saw a 30-year-high of 31,241 abortions in 2023, a 3.7% increase from 2022. Even without an official recording, it is estimated that number increased in 2024.

The lives of the unborn must be respected and protected at all stages. And women must be presented with every opportunity to make the hopeful and courageous choice for life.

In the 2024 election, we saw the true power of the prolife movement in our state, with nearly 90% of RLM-PAC endorsed candidates winning their races, retaking a prolife majority in the State House. There is still a powerful prolife voice in our state, and Respect Life Month reminds us to use it every day of every year, not just when it’s time to vote.

Believe me, I know it can seem scary to be loud and proud in your prolife beliefs. I even had initial hesitations when I applied to Right to Life of Michigan. What would people think of me if I worked for a prolife organization? Would I be judged or rejected by people close to me? I had to weigh the pros and cons, and ultimately decided that defending life is an issue I couldn’t shy away from just because I was scared of what others would think. Women and the unborn need to be respected and protected, and every voice matters in that fight

I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone this Respect Life Month. Find volunteer opportunities with your local Right to Life affiliate.
