Prolife Income Tax Check-Off
HB 6194
Rep. John Pastor
Current Status
H.B. 6194 was introduced in the House on June 3, 2008 and referred to the Committee on Tax Policy.
Description
This bill would allow an individual taxpayer the opportunity to designate
either $5 or $10 of his or her Michigan tax refund to be credited to
the following prolife funds already established in law, namely the Pregnant
and Parenting Student Services Act and the Ultrasound Equipment Grant
Program.
The Pregnant and Parenting
Student Services Act was established in 2004 to provide funds to colleges
and universities by encouraging pregnant students to stay in school
while bringing their baby to term. A resource office would be set up
on campus, where pregnant students could go for assistance, whether
her need be academic advocacy, housing, adoption referrals, transportation,
child care, etc.
Secondly, this legislation
would allow the taxpayer to check off the box noted on the tax form
to donate $5 or $10 from their tax rebate to a grant program for the
purpose of purchasing ultrasound equipment for nonprofit pregnancy centers.
The centers would have to provide a cash match of at least 50% of the
grant, in order to be eligible. Experience proves that when abortion-minded
women actually see their own baby on the ultrasound monitor, they choose
life for their baby 84% of the time.
This prolife measure could
raise untold dollars which would be put to work to help mothers save
their babies' lives.
